The Pineview Nature Trail appears to be a long abandoned nature trail near the north arm of Pineview Reservoir. It’s pretty, and has some nice fall color, but it is very overgrown and a little hard to navigate. We added this this loop to the Pineview Trail. However, it had quite a different feel to it, so I decided to make it it’s own post.
Quick Details:
Length: It can be either a 9/10th of a mile balloon trail, or a half mile additional loop when added to the Pineview Trail.
Difficulty: DR3. Pretty mild elevation gain.
Elevation Gain: N/A
Restroom: Yes, pit toilets at the North Arm Trailhead.
Dogs? Yes, leashed.
Other Info: Don’t follow behind your trail mate too closely on this one. Lots of branches snapping back.
To Get Here:
Head to the top of Ogden Canyon. Turn left to cross the dam for Pineview Reservoir. Drive about 3.5 miles and turn right into the North Arm Trailhead parking. Alternate TH is about 2.5 miles from the dam just after the yacht club.
That’s the easiest way to explain. You can also come over via Weber Canyon and across HW 167, which is what we ended up doing.
The Trail:
We eventually made our way to the North Arm Trailhead. We actually stopped here briefly 4 years ago on our Trappers Loop Fall Drive.
And we’re off! Some nice color to see.
First little bridge.
Sensitive wildlife area for the ospreys.
Into the woods!
New bridge being built. I heard the original bridge got washed away earlier this year, but I can’t find any information about it.
At about 2/10’s of a mile you will come to the trail split. The Nature trail is to the left. Forward will continue along the Pineview Trail.
I don’t know when this nature trail was created, but it seems to have long been forgotten.
Little bit of color.
Lots of color.
The path was paved at one point, so it’s still pretty easy to follow, but is getting quite overgrown.
More color.
Quite a few areas we had to duck under.
Like I mentioned, it seems this trail has long been forgotten about. It’s actually a little creepy, which I guess is appropriate for the month.
Looking up.
Some color hanging on.
Narrow corridor.
Old information sign that has either been removed, or has long since faded.
Overgrown bench.
Awkward branch across the path. To high to step over, too low to comfortably duck under, but doable.
More color.
For a paved trail it really feels an awful lot like we are just aimlessly stumbling through the woods.
Dried thistle.
Red and yellow.
More color.
Really overgrown section.
Really low hanging branches. We really had to duck low to get through.
More color.
Well, that was The Nature Trail. It was, well, natural, as in nature is taking it back. I did enjoy some of the color we saw, but the overgrown path was a little frustrating to follow, and like I said, a bit on the creepy side. I can’t imagine what it must be like in the height of summer. Yikes. Going with 7 out of 10 squirrels.
As for difficulty, it;s flat and paved, but there are some obstacles to get around and a lot of branches snapping back (don’t follow your trail mate too closely).
Dogs are allowed, leashed. Please clean up after your furry friend.
