This segment of the Great Western Trail located in East Canyon shares a path with the Mormon Pioneer Trail. It features some nice mixed forest, wildflowers, and a small stream. There isn’t a whole lot to it but it was a nice add on to our little fall drive through East Canyon. Plus, it was practically deserted so it was a nice quiet stroll through the woods.
Quick Details:
Length: We did about 1.4 miles out and back, but it appeared to keep going.
Trail Type: Out and back.
Difficulty: DR3. It was a bit of a climb back up, but not too bad.
Elevation Gain: We did about 415 feet.
Restroom: Yes there are pit toilets.
Dogs? No. It appears this is within watershed.
Other Info: This trail starts at the top, meaning you will return uphill.
To Get Here:
Take i80 up Parleys Canyon to exit 134 for East Canyon. Head north for about 8.4 miles to the Big Mountain Summit. the trail is to the north.

Historical Marker.
It appears early Mormon pioneers came through here, but not before the Donner Party did a year before cutting a trail from Modern day Henefer to here.
Last time we were here, we hiked to the south. So today we decided to explore north.
Some nice splashes of color as we head down.
The trail follows this clear cut for the power lines for a bit.

Well… I guess this is the end of the line for us today. I had planned on pushing on to about 3/4 of a mile for a nice 1.5 mile out and back but, eh, 7/10th of a mile is pretty close I guess. I probably could have made it across the log, but I didn’t want to risk having wet feet this early in our adventure.
More forest.

Well, there was not a whole lot to that trail, however I quite enjoyed the solitude of it. Just a nice quiet stroll through the woods, with a bit of a climb back up. 6 out of 10 squirrels today.
As for difficulty, it was a bit of a climb back up, but not too bad. DR3.
Dogs are not allowed due to watershed restrictions. So be sure to leave Fido at home for this one.
