Miller Bird Refuge and Bonneville Glen

Miller Bird Refuge (AKA Miller Park) is a cute little park in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City. The trail features a creek, and a beautiful little forested oasis in the heart of the city. It is a lovely little trail to enjoy the last little bits of the fall color. So, I tend to come by near the end of fall lately.

Quick Details:

Length: It is about a mile loop including the attached Bonneville Glen.
Trail Type: Loop
Difficulty: DR3. Its mostly flat, but there are some ups and downs. DR3.
Elevation Gain: About 65 feet.
Restroom: No.
Dogs? Leashed in Miller Park, but not in Bonneville Glen.
Other Info:

To Get Here:

Take i80 to the 13th east exit. Head north on 13th E for about 1.5 miles. Turn right on 1300 S. 1600 Ft later turn left on 15th E. About 1600 ft later turn right on Bonneview Dr. There is street parking, but check the signs.

Some fall color along the roads (Passenger Seat Photography (PSP)).

This house looks very similar to the Pumpkin House (PSP). I wonder if there is a specific style it is called.

Some more color along the road (PSP).

The Trail:

We started at Bonneville Glen on the west side.

Some color.

I love this giant fireplace.

A panoramic to show the whole thing.

Red Butte Creek.

Again.

Lovely woods.

The creek with a bunch of leaf litter.

Ivy wrapped tree.

Super pretty in here.

A lovely little waterfall.

Closer.

With a swirl of leaves.

Tree with a fun gradient of color.

Onto Miller Bird Refuge.

Note, you do not have to do both parks if you don’t want to. There is a connector to the road here as well. But, I mean, they are both super short so why not do both? Unless you have a dog.

Map and rules.

Some color.

The creek.

It looks like they are revegetating through here.

More color.

More ivy.

Color.

Continuing along.

The beautiful bridge built in the 30’s or 40’s by the WPA.

The top.

The other side. It is a very pretty bridge!

The creek.

The trail. I believe all of the stone work in the park was done by the WPA as well.

The creek.

The east entrance.

The next place to see the creek upstream is Sunnyside Park.

I like the way this sign is worded.

Cute little amphitheater.

Heading down on the other side of the creek.

Color.

Stairs down to the bottom of the gully.

It is so pretty in here.

The creek.

A couple little cascades.

I love these vines that make trees look like scary witches this time of year. Reverse image search says Oriental bittersweet. It is a destructive weed that strangles the host trees. O.o I guess I don't love them so much anymore.

Color.

The neat bridge again.

Top.

Twisted trees as we climb back to the top of the gully.

Color.

Back to the top of the gully.

Little bit of reds and oranges.

Tree tunnel.

English ivy. Extremely invasive, and also kills the host trees by stealing the light, but it looks good doing it.

Closer.

Pretty orange.

The lower bridge.

Downstream.

Stairs covered in dry leaves.

Heading back down into Bonneville Glen.

The little waterfall again.

Again.

Downstream.

Upstream.

We came up the north side, so we went down the south side.

Pretty.

The big fireplace on the other side.

The creek.

Again.

Upstream.

Again.

Just above where the creek goes under the road.

The next place downstream to enjoy this creek is at Liberty Park.

The fireplace again.

The quirky Fun Time Kidz Kare (PSP). This unique building has inspired a lot of urban legend and lore. I’m pretty sure it’s just a unique building but I don’t live nearby so, what do I know haha. One of these days I would like to stop and get better pictures.

As usual, that is a fun walk. I particularly enjoy it as an end of fall walk to get in the last of the fall colors. It’s also a great add-on walk since it is so short. 10 out of 10 squirrels today.

As for difficulty, its almost like paved, but there is a lot of up and down, and some stairs. DR3.

Dogs are allowed, leashed, in Miller Park, but not in Bonneville Glen. So if you brought Fido, use the upper entrance, or the far east entrance. Please clean up after your furry friends.
