Antelope Island - Lake Side Trail

The Lake Side trail is really a neat trail that goes from Bridger Bay to White Rock Bay along the North West side of Antelope Island. There are a lot of really fascinating rock formations to walk around and some great views of the lake.

This is located on the northwest corner of the island at the end of the Bridger Bay campground. It can also be accessed from White Rock Bay.

The trailhead. This is located on the far west end of the Bridger Bay campground.

It starts out going through desert landscape with lots of sagebrush.

IMG_4969

Bridger Bay. You can see Lady Finger Point and Egg Island.

IMG_4971

A little closer there is an old buoy out there too.

IMG_4974

I think this is Promontory Point.

IMG_4979

Big boulder.

With a frozen seep.

The trail again.

IMG_4990

I was marveling at the weird wall of clouds in front of the mountains before I realized it had to be inversion. Already? Didn’t we just have a storm blow that all out? Ick!

IMG_4995

Other than just how cold it is, the only evidence of it being winter are some random frozen puddles. I thought for sure there would be snow, but I guess not.

IMG_5002

Weird line in the lake. I think this is due to a difference in salinity.

IMG_4993

And we are almost to the intended destination of the day. A neat archway.

IMG_5003

And we made it to the neat rock! This is about .7 miles in.

IMG_5004

It’s a cool 3 way arch!

IMG_5006

The smaller window makes a great natural frame.

IMG_5007

Not too bad through the larger opening as well.

IMG_5011

The rock behind it is kind of an arch as well.

IMG_5015

It is really a neat little rock formation.

IMG_5019

Bridger Bay, Lady Finger Point and I think Ben Lomond most obscured by smog.

This was the intended destination, however we decided to keep going a little further. I am glad we did, because this awesome rock, is just where the trail gets interesting.

IMG_5030

Looking back towards the cool triple arched rock. Looks kind of like an elephant from here.

IMG_5044

Walking into the sunset.

IMG_5045

The trail goes through some great rocks.

This seriously is unlike anything around here. More reminiscent of southern Utah.

Sunset again.

IMG_5053

Crazy rocks.

IMG_5054

Sunset on the lake.

IMG_5063

Hillside full of crazy rocks and arches.

More rocks.

Another interesting window.

Another sunset shot.

Pothole filled with ice.

The lake again.

IMG_5093

We reached the moment where we should probably return less we be hiking after dark. I pushed on just a little bit in hopes of seeing White Rock Bay. And here it is. Okay, we can turn back now.

IMG_5090

A couple buffalo grazing.

IMG_5102

Last shots of the sunset, some great color across the lake.

IMG_5103

Returning the way we came.

Bunny! From personal experience, sunset seems to be the time to see these guys. Funny thing is, they blend in so well I only notice them when they freak out and hop away. Once they get far enough away I completely lose them again.

IMG_5113

Iddy biddy window.

IMG_5115

IMG_5116

The rocks along the tip of the island are just amazing.

IMG_5118

And at the same time kind of scary, as it looks like they could roll down at any time.

Promontory Point.

That was a fun adventure. One of these days we’ll actually finish that trail, but I am glad we got as far as we did today and saw all the neat rock formations. Plus the sunset was great on the lake. There wasn’t another soul on the trail either. 10 out of 10 squirrels today.

As for difficulty, the short section we did was mostly flat. There were a couple quick climbs, but nothing to really be concerned about. DR3.

Dogs are allowed, on a leash no longer than 6 ft.
