Dinosaur National Monument: Desert Voices Tail

The Desert Voices Trail located on the Utah portion of Dinosaur National Monument is a really pretty walk through the desert and is actually quite scenic. It’s not too tough, however there is no shade so it can get quite warm. I recommend planning this one as early as you can.

To Get Here:

Head into Dinosaur National Monument via the Quarry Visitor Center. Look for the Split Mountain turn off to the left about 2.2 miles beyond the visitor center. Little cave.

Antlion traps.

IMG_7497

The trail follows Cottonwood Wash for the first little while.

IMG_7499

I liked the quote. There are periodic information signs all along the trail. White ones for adults a gray one made by kids, for kids. It is kind of fun.

IMG_7505

There is quite a bit of greenery.

IMG_7640

Keep an eye for the fist trail split, and follow the signs advice to go to the right. It will be much easier this way.

IMG_7507

Red hills.

IMG_7515

The trail crosses and becomes the wash a few times.

IMG_7522

Pretty red canyon.

IMG_7523

Looking back towards Split Mountain.

IMG_7524

Multi-colored hills.

IMG_7526

Pretty desert scenery.

IMG_7532

Just enjoying the tranquility. The monument, and this trail in particular, has very little noise pollution and all you can hear is the desert. It’s incredible.

IMG_7533

Pretty mountains.

IMG_7535

Neat little alcoves in the sandstone. And some vandalism above.

IMG_7540

IMG_7546

Lots of pretty colors.

Split Mountain again.

IMG_7550

As you get up in elevation you start to see more of the mountains.

IMG_7552

Lizard!

IMG_7555

Split Mountain again. I love that little pinnacle on the top left.

IMG_7556

Lovely trail through the desert.IMG_7559

Starting to really see the cliffs above.

IMG_7560

You can take this connector trail to connect to the Sound Of Silence trail. If I remember right it will add about 3.5 – 4 miles. This is also about the halfway point for the Desert Voices Trail.

IMG_7563

Lots of layers of color here.

IMG_7564

As we cross over the ridge you see some yellow rocks.

IMG_7568

And now we get a different view.

IMG_7570

Desert.

IMG_7578

Fun pocked wall.

IMG_7580

Desert pothole.

IMG_7583

Fun cliff.

IMG_7586

Juniper tree growing out of a rock.

IMG_7588

More colorful rocks.

IMG_7594

Pretty.

IMG_7595

Quick climb up over the ridge again.

IMG_7596

The view across the desert.

IMG_7598

Huh. I didn’t know that about lichens. Basically the more vibrant the colors, the better the air quality is.

IMG_7597

And the air quality is really good here.

IMG_7599

The cliffs of Split Mountain again.

IMG_7604

Great viewpoint up here.

Desert Voices

Panoramic.

IMG_7607

And now the trip down the mountain. You can kind of see where the green river cuts through the mountain.

IMG_7614

Pretty scenery.

IMG_7616

This rock kind of looks like a puma.

IMG_7623

Nice view.

IMG_7624

Rocky ridge.

IMG_7627

The path down goes through these red hills. This kind of reminds me of The Petrified Dunes Trail in Snow Canyon State Park.

IMG_7629

Looking up the wash.

IMG_7630

This is a neat ridge too.

IMG_7632

Walking down the colorful ridge. I am glad we are coming down this way. I’m not sure I would have made it up.

IMG_7635

Looking up the little valley again.

IMG_7638

Back down to the initial split. Almost done with the hike.

IMG_7641

Back down to the wash.

IMG_7645

More of the pretty flowers.

IMG_7646

I’m kind of regretting not going down to the riverside to look at these caves a little closer, but oh well.

IMG_7648

Pretty striped hills.

Well that was a fun hike, with some really fantastic views. Not too difficult. However it was kind of hot. I would definitely recommend doing this one in the morning before it has gotten too hot out. But, other than that we enjoyed it. Going with 8 out of 10 Squirrels.

8 Squirrels

As for difficulty, there was a climb, but it wasn’t too bad. DR3.

Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
