Vernal is a small city located in Eastern Utah and is just outside Dinosaur National Monument. With that, and a bunch of other things we found there are surprisingly a lot of great adventures to keep you entertained for days on end. We spent a total of 4 days here and barely scratched the surface. Day one is mostly the drive up, but it was actually surprisingly scenic so I made it it’s own post.
Day 1: The drive out and McConkie Ranch.
We decided to go up Weber Canyon then drop down 80 to connect with 40 to head out.
The burn scar from the recent Uintah Fire (DBP).
Weber Canyon is quite pretty (DBP).
This is the wall above the rapids we floated through last summer (DBP).
Devils Slide (DBP).
The Weber Arch (DBP). I actually discovered on the way back that there is a 2nd arch in this canyon.
The colorful formations above Echo (DBP).
The Weber River (DBP).
Echo Reservoir (DBP).
Jordanelle Reservoir (DBP).
A little bit of fall color up here (DBP).
In the Heber Valley, the back side of Mt Timpanogos (DBP).
After the turn off to US 40 we are about to enter Daniels Canyon (DBP) The is officially the furthest we have been this direction.
It is a rather pretty canyon (both DBP).
I found a radio tower in disguise (DBP).
Daniels Pass 8020 ft. (DBP).
Strawberry Reservoir (DBP).
At the Strawberry Reservoir Scenic Viewpoint.
Panoramic. It’s quite a bit larger than I had imagined.
The Soldier Creek section of the reservoir (DBP).
Some more fall colors (DBP).
Starting to hit some pretty red rocks. Plus a random red tailed hawk (DBP)
The Pinion Ridge Rest Area has a short walking trail to stretch your legs. And it is about the halfway point, so it’s kind of perfect.
Reflections of reflections (DBP) eh, it caught my eye.
Approaching Starvation Reservoir (DBP).
Crossing the reservoir (DBP).
Neat cliffs (DBP).
A couple of antelope (DBP).
More cool cliffs (DBP).
Hitting Roosevelt (DBP). Keep an eye out for the turn off to stay on US40.
Random Native American statue in front of a nail salon? (DBP).
Bottle Hollow Reservoir (DBP).
Northern Ute Veterans Memorial (DBP).
Starting to really hit the desert scenery and getting close (DBP)
Entering the Ashley Basin (DBP). So pretty up here.
And we have reached Vernal (DBP).
Random dinosaur eating a watermelon (DBP).
Dinah the pink dinosaur (DBP).
We stopped by the hotel to check in real quick and figured we had enough time to check out McConkie Ranch before it got dark. There are 2 neat trails.
And The Three Kings Trail.
Both are amazing trails worth checking out. Plan on at least 2 hours up there.
After that we decided to pick up some dinner and head back to the hotel to relax.
I think I am going to stop this post here. Be sure to continue on to Day 2: Dinosaur National Monument,
