Provo River Falls

The Provo River Falls is a series of 3 rather spectacular waterfalls along the Provo River in the high Uinta’s. The very short trail system is pretty easy to get to see all 3 waterfalls and you can see the biggest one from the parking lot. We were camping up here this weekend and decided to come check it out because it has been a minute and they are pretty.

Quick Details:

Length: I didn’t think to measure it today, but I am sure it is less than a quarter of a mile loop.
Trail Type: Loop.
Difficulty: DR3 with a DR1 option.
Elevation Gain: eh, about 50 feet or so.
Restroom: Yes there are vault toilets on site.
Dogs? Yes, leashed.
Other Info:

To Get Here:

It is 23.9 miles from the start of the Mirror Lake Highway in Kamas. After you pass mile marker 23, keep an eye out for it on the left. It’s pretty hard to miss.

Pulling in to the parking lot (Passenger Seat Photography (PSP)). The lot is pretty small, but there is overflow parking along the road if it is full. We found a spot.

The Trail:

Mountains to the west.

The upper waterfall from the parking lot. So, even if you can’t do the trail you can at least see this one.

We decided to take the shortest route down to the upper waterfall.

Holy crap this thing is absolutely raging! I have never seen them this high before. Then again, we don’t usually come up here this early in the year.

There is still some snow up here. I am glad we didn’t venture up much further today.

The river again, at the top of the lower falls.

The lower falls. The last few times we have been here the trail down to the lower viewpoint has been closed. So I was a little surprised and excited that it was open today.

Another side waterfall.

Little side stream on the trail.

Closer look at the side waterfalls.

This viewpoint is a little sketchy so I didn’t like it much with the raging river so we made our way back up. I probably wouldn't mind it so much with a calmer river.

The lower falls through the trees.

The top of the lower falls.

The middle falls again as we make our way up the other side of the loop. It is a very busy little area!

Some phlox.

Glacier lily.

A couple more.

The upper falls again.

Well, it was super busy today, as per usual but it was great to be able to see all three falls completely. Also, I have never seen them absolutely raging like they are today, it was super cool, but also made me a little nervous. But, just keep an eye on your little ones and you should be fine. 10 out of 10 squirrels today.

As for difficulty, the main trail is partly paved, and easy. DR3. You can also see the upper falls from the parking lot, so DR1 for that.

Dogs are allowed, but should remain leashed.
