The Real Life Up House

Just off of Main Street in Herriman is a house that was specifically designed to look the the house from Disney’s “Up”. This has been on my radar for a random Utah oddity for a minute so since we were nearby I decided to make a quick stop to check it out.

Quick Details:

Length: NA
Trail Type: Get out and see
Difficulty: Get out and see, DR1
Elevation Gain: NA
Restroom: No.
Dogs? Dogs are allowed on public sidewalks, leashed. But I mean, just leave Fido in the car for this.
Other Info: Yes, they specifically made it a tourist attraction, but do keep in mind people live here, so be mindful and respectful. Respect their wishes to stay on the outside of the fence, and keep your visit to 3 minutes or less.

To Get Here:

Take Bangerter Highway to 126th South, heading west. Go about 1.4 miles and turn Left on Main Street. Go about 7/10ths of a mile and turn left on Herriman Rose Boulevard. Go about 3/10ths of a mile and the very hard to miss house will be on the right.

I mean, wow (Passenger Seat Photography (PSP)). It really does look like it! This was our first pass while we looked for parking.

The Trail:

From across the street. I am a little sad there are cars parking in front but, hindsight being 20/20 perhaps Mothers Day was not the best day to come check this out.

Cartoon and real life, side by side. It looks pretty on point.

It is super cute.

As I understand it, the developer, Bangerter Homes actually decided to build the house. It is not an exact replica, as there were no blue prints, but they did replicate it as well as they could, outside and inside including furniture. They even got permission from Disney to do so, with the caveat that they turn over their blueprints when it was finished. It was built and went on sale in 2011 for $399.000.

So, again, even though they made is a tourist destination, I know people live here so it feels a little weird getting close and taking pictures, so I planned on being super quick.

Then I noticed that they have posted some general rules, including a 3 minute limit, and of course, stay outside of the fence.

The right side. I didn’t see any reason to try to go further along to see the back side.

The front. The colors appear to be on point.

The left side with a LGBTQ+ flag, which makes me happy.

The garage.

Weathervane.

The house again.

Did you know that up is loosely based on a true story? The film was inspired by the real-life story of Edith Macefield, who famously refused to sell her house in Seattle when the surrounding land was acquired by developers in 2006.

She passed in 2008, and the house was eventually sold to developers, however, it is currently still standing, surrounded by a shopping mall. and can be seen on google maps.

Image from google maps. I kind of wish I had known about it when I was in Seattle.

One last shot before we leave (PSP).

Well, that was pretty neat, but as I said, even though they specifically made it a tourist attraction it still felt a little intrusive. So I tried to be as quick as I possibly could. This was just a cute little oddity. I am not a huge Up fan, or Disney fan for that matter either. I did like the movie though. Meh, worth stopping by if you are in the area, but I certainly would not make a special trip out to it. 7 Squirrels.

As for difficulty, it is really just get out and look. DR1, with maybe a little walking.

Dogs are allowed on city sidewalks, leashed. But seriously, just leave them in the car (safely) they is no need to add additional headache to this little attraction.
