8th and 9th Smith’s Sequoia

The Smiths Grocery Store on 8th South and 9th East is well, a Smiths. But, there is something interesting to be seen here, a rather large sequoia tree!

We were on a random redwood scavenger hunt today and I tacked this one on at the end due to losing light. Other than the tree there is not much here, so I almost tacked it on to our previous adventure, but decided to make it it’s own post.

Quick Details:

Length: Meh, a few feet.
Trail Type: Get out and see, out and back.
Difficulty: DR1. Get out and see, little bit of walking if you want.
Elevation Gain: NA
Restroom: I am sure there is likely one in Smiths, but I did not check myself. I do know, downtown public restrooms can be more of an issue due to the unhoused population.
Dogs? Dogs are allowed in Salt Lake City public sidewalks, leashed.
Other Info:

To Get Here:

It is located at 876 East 8th South. Take i15 to the 6th South exit and head east. Turn right on 9th East and it will be on the right just after 8th South. There is a gas station on the northeast part of the parking lot that you can park at without being in the way.

The Trail:

The Smiths behind the Smiths Gas Station.

The base of the sequoia. It is on the northeast corner of the Smiths parking lot.

The needles. They are quite a bit more rough than other conifer trees.

Looking up.

Some random chairs to relax in if you want.

The base again.

Unfortunately it appears this one has been chopped so it does not interfere with the nearby power lines. Such a shame.

Vertical panoramic.

Well, we were losing light, but still got a nice view. I am a little sad it has been hacked at due to the power lines, but otherwise it is a nice specimen. I did feel a little weird pulling up to Smiths and getting out to take pictures of a tree, but it's what I do. Anyway, quick stop, with nothing other than the tree. 6 out of 10 squirrels.

As for difficulty, this is literally drive up and see. DR1.

Dog are allowed on Salt Lake City public sidewalks, leashed. So I assume they are fine here.
